KATHMANDU: Actress Sushmita Bomjan has clarified why she has continued using her former husband actor Bhuwan KC’s surname, decades after their divorce.

Sushmita had adopted the surname “KC” after marrying Bhuwan KC.

Following their separation more than two decades ago—after the birth of their son, actor Anmol KC—she never changed it.

Her name still appears as Sushmita KC on her social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram.

Recently, the continued use of the KC surname sparked widespread discussion online. Some social media users questioned her decision, while others even left offensive comments, calling her a “slave” to her ex-husband’s identity.

As criticism intensified, Sushmita addressed the issue in a video message on Saturday evening.

In the video, she said the surname KC is deeply meaningful to her because it is shared by her son. “I don’t just love the surname KC, I love it very, very, very much,” she said. “Because the person with this surname is my son.

He is my heart, my life, my soul, my everything. His name is Anmol KC. That is why the surname KC is extremely special to me.”

She also explained that during her time, it was a social norm for women to adopt their husband’s surname after marriage. “In my generation, it was customary to take the husband’s surname after marriage. It was a tradition to be absorbed into the husband’s family identity,” she added.

Sushmita has been living in India in recent years and has been away from films for more than six years.

Her last released movie was School in 2020. She also produced the film Ma Ta Timrai Hu in 2016 under her own investment.

Her notable works include Crorepati, Nepali Babu, and Ta Ta Sarai Bigris Ni Badri, among several other successful films.
