Eyes of Mohan Prasad Oli donated after death
Doctors said the corneas were healthy and suitable for transplantation, despite his advanced age.
KATHMANDU: The eyes of Mohan Prasad Oli, father of UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, have been donated, fulfilling his final wish.
Mohan Prasad Oli (97) died on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at the Nepal Korea Friendship Hospital in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, after suffering sudden health complications.
According to family members and leaders of the CPN-UML, he had expressed his wish to donate his eyes so that someone else could see the world after his death.
Medical technicians from Tilganga Eye Centre collected the corneas before his funeral rites. Doctors said the corneas were healthy and suitable for transplantation, despite his advanced age.
Party secretary Mahesh Basnet said the eye donation was carried out in accordance with Mohan Prasad Oli’s final wish and sends a positive message about organ donation in society.
“He wanted someone to see the world even after his passing,” Basnet said.
Mohan Prasad Oli’s last rites were performed at the Pashupatinath Aryaghat cremation ground in Kathmandu, where his son, KP Sharma Oli, lit the funeral pyre.
Doctors involved in the procedure said that corneas can remain healthy even at an advanced age if there are no underlying eye diseases or previous eye surgeries.
Many have praised his decision as an inspiring act of compassion and social responsibility, highlighting the importance of organ donation in helping people regain sight.
