UML moves to oust Ward Chair for joining RSP convention
The UML's Morang district committee has initiated proceedings to recommend Subedi’s removal from his ward chair position, citing a violation of party discipline.
KATHMANDU: Yogendra Subedi, ward chair of Belbari Municipality-3 in Morang, has come under disciplinary action after participating as a representative in the general convention of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) despite being elected from the CPN-UML.
The UML’s Morang district committee has initiated proceedings to recommend Subedi’s removal from his ward chair position, citing a violation of party discipline.
The decision was taken during a district office-bearers’ meeting held in Biratnagar on June 23, according to district secretary Somraj Thapa.
The controversy intensified after Subedi used social media to campaign for lawmaker Ganesh Karki, urging delegates to elect him as a central committee member of the RSP.
UML leaders described the move as an act contrary to the party’s organizational code of conduct.
Subedi, a second-term ward chair, had also served as spokesperson for Belbari Municipality during his first term.
He was previously a district committee member of UML but is reported to have become inactive within the party following the Gen Z movement and later resigned from the district committee.
The case follows similar instances in Morang where elected local representatives lost their positions after switching political affiliations.
The Election Commission Nepal had previously removed ward chairs Ram Kumar Shrestha and Mahesh Kumar Khanal after they joined different political parties. Shrestha had entered the Shram Sanskriti Party, while Khanal joined the RSP.
