KATHMANDU: The group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is reaching its final phase, with the knockout stage picture gradually becoming clearer.

This edition features an expanded format, with 48 teams divided into 12 groups. From these, only 32 teams will advance to the knockout rounds.

How 32 Teams Will Qualify

The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the Round of 32, producing 24 direct qualifiers.

The remaining eight spots will be filled by the best-performing third-placed teams across all groups.

These teams are ranked based on points first, followed by head-to-head records (if applicable), goal difference, goals scored, fair play points, and finally FIFA rankings if needed.

Tournament Structure

The Round of 32 matches will take place from June 28 to July 3. It will be followed by the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoff, and the final scheduled for July 19.
