Habeas corpus petition filed for Bishnu Paudel
The petition claims Paudel was arrested without sufficient evidence and alleges that his detention is politically motivated.
KATHMANDU: A habeas corpus petition has been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the detention of former Deputy Prime Minister and CPN-UML Vice Chair Bishnu Paudel, with his wife arguing that he has been held unlawfully.
The petition claims Paudel was arrested without sufficient evidence and alleges that his detention is politically motivated.
It seeks a court order for his immediate release.
Paudel was taken into custody by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation after investigators cited statements indicating that he had introduced individuals involved in a share transaction linked to businessman Deepak Bhatta and Kamalkishor Malpani’s group.
Authorities on Tuesday secured a five-day remand to continue the investigation.
He was arrested on Monday while attending a program in Surkhet and was subsequently transported overnight to Kathmandu by public vehicle.
