KATHMANDU: Mamata Sharma, founding president of the Madhesh Province unit of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), formally joined the Nepali Congress (NC) on Wednesday.

The induction took place at a ceremonial event in Dhanusha, where NC President Gagan Kumar Thapa welcomed her with a traditional khada (shawl).

Addressing the gathering, Sharma described the RSP as “the old Congress” and praised the Nepali Congress for emerging stronger and more unified under the leadership and policies established during its special convention.

Sharma had resigned from the RSP earlier that day, relinquishing even her general membership, citing financial irregularities in the selection of candidates for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5.

Her move is seen as a significant political development in the run-up to the elections, strengthening the NC’s position in the Madhesh region.
