KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has described the rise of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) as an important achievement of the broader alternative political campaign he once led.

Speaking at the inauguration of RSP’s national convention in Chitwan, Bhattarai said he does not follow “illusions or political gimmicks,” responding to public criticism suggesting he was being misled by the party.

“Our society is at a very low level of political awareness. I hear people saying RSP has shown me a lollipop. I have lived a full political life, what lollipop would I need?” he remarked.

He added that he has already served as Prime Minister and achieved key political milestones, questioning what personal gain he could still be seeking from politics.

Bhattarai clarified that his political journey has always been driven by the goal of good governance and prosperity for all, not personal benefit or symbolic rewards.

Describing the evolution of Nepal’s political change, he said the efforts of previous generations have led to the current phase of “alternative and new politics,” and congratulated RSP for emerging as a leading force in this direction.

He further noted that the success of RSP should be seen as part of a continuous political process aimed at reform, inclusion, and transformation of Nepal’s governance system.
