KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has demanded the unconditional release of medical professional Durga Prasai, who was recently taken into custody.

A party delegation met with Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal on Tuesday to press the demand.

Niranjan Thapa, a member of RPP’s Executive Committee, stated that Prasai’s arrest was unconstitutional and urged the minister for his immediate release.

The leaders emphasized that detaining an individual exercising their fundamental rights was inappropriate.

Responding to the delegation, Minister Aryal noted that Prasai’s case has already been submitted to the police court, which will decide the matter.

Prasai was arrested by police on Monday following a notice from the Election Commission, marking his second detention.

Earlier, the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau had arrested him on Feb 2 for allegedly violating the election code of conduct.

He was later released on bail on Feb 8 as per the direction of the District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu.

Based on the Election Commission’s letter, the court permitted police to keep Prasai in custody for four days to facilitate investigation.
