KATHMANDU: Director Rajkumar Hirani has offered an encouraging update for fans eagerly waiting for sequels to two of Bollywood’s most beloved films — Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots.

Speaking in an interview with ABP News, Hirani said he is keen on making sequels to both iconic films, though the scripts are still in development stages. “I want to make both these films,” he said, adding that the writing process for Munna Bhai has been ongoing for years.

He revealed that several draft versions of the Munna Bhai sequel have been written over time, with at least three to four incomplete scripts in progress. “One version has been worked on extensively, but it is still not fully ready,” Hirani noted, expressing hope that the final script will be completed soon.

The filmmaker also shared that he has a finished script for a separate project titled Dada Saheb Phalke, but his attention has once again shifted back toward comedy, which he feels strongly drawn to at this stage.

Hirani indicated that if everything falls into place, work on the Munna Bhai sequel could begin as early as next year.

The original Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) marked Hirani’s directorial debut and became a massive success, featuring memorable performances by Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Dutt, Arshad Warsi, and Gracy Singh.

Its sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), further strengthened the franchise’s popularity.

Meanwhile, 3 Idiots (2009), starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, remains one of India’s most loved films, widely praised for its portrayal of student life and the education system.

Even years later, both films continue to enjoy a strong fan following, fueling anticipation for their possible continuations.
