KATHMANDU: Nepal Premier League (NPL) fans are in for a treat as the second season of the country’s premier T20 tournament gears up.

Janakpur Bolts, the defending champions, have made a blockbuster signing by bringing in South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, adding international experience and star power to their already formidable lineup.

The 46-year-old Tahir, born in Pakistan and a veteran of nearly 1,000 matches across formats, has taken over 2,000 wickets globally.

His international career includes 57 wickets in 20 Tests, 173 wickets in 107 ODIs, and 63 wickets in 38 T20 Internationals.

In franchise cricket, Tahir has dazzled audiences in England, South Africa, and the Indian Premier League, representing over 50 teams worldwide.

He made his ODI debut in 2011 against West Indies, claiming four wickets in that match alone.

Janakpur Bolts’ Managing Director, Niroj Khatriwada, expressed excitement about the acquisition, saying, “The arrival of a globally recognized name like Imran Tahir brings experience, energy, and world-class confidence to our team. His presence will inspire our young squad and strengthen our bowling attack significantly.” Tahir becomes the third international recruit for the Bolts this season, joining Sri Lankan-American hero Lahiru Milantha and South African fast bowler Wayne Parnell.

The coaching department has also received a major boost. West Indies cricket legend Shivnarayan Chandrapal has been appointed as head coach, replacing Pubudu Dasanayake, who now leads the rival team, Biratnagar Kings.

Chandrapal, arriving in Nepal for the first time, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am excited to be here and look forward to building on the team’s previous success. Nepalese cricket has immense potential, and with the right infrastructure, it can reach new heights.”

Janakpur Bolts have also partnered with Cloud Education & Visa Service for the NPL season.

Khatriwada highlighted that this collaboration would continue to strengthen in the future, while Cloud Education CEO Anish Gautam wished the team success in defending their title.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Gurkhas has announced Jamboree Education Nepal as their official knowledge partner for the NPL 2.

Players will sport the organization’s logo on their jerseys, starting with the tournament opener against Janakpur Bolts.

The team, under coach Monty Desai, is currently preparing rigorously for the season. Both sides emphasized that this partnership bridges sports and education, nurturing young talent both on and off the field.

The stage is set for another unforgettable season, where legacy, skill, and youthful energy collide in pursuit of cricketing glory.
