KATHMANDU:  Republic Central Stadium witnessed a tough start for Nepal in their AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifying campaign as they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against hosts Tajikistan on Wednesday.

Despite aiming for all three points, Nepal struggled from the outset, failing to threaten the Tajikistan goal throughout both halves.

Taking advantage of Nepal’s weak defense, Muhammad Ali Azizboev scored twice, while Rahmatjoja Rahmatsho and Sharipov Daler added one goal each, securing a vital win for the home side.

The loss leaves Nepal with a daunting task in Group ‘K’, while Tajikistan strengthens their chances of qualification.

From the kickoff, Tajikistan kept Nepal under constant pressure.

In the 39th minute, Kamolov Amadoni bypassed captain Sumit Shrestha to deliver a cut-back to Azizboev near the six-yard box.

Defender Ram Thapa lost his balance while marking him, and midfielder Kritisharatna Chhunjoo was also out of position, allowing Azizboev an easy opening for the goal.

Though Nepal conceded just once in the first half, Tajikistan showcased clinical finishing in the second half, scoring three more times, including two goals within a single minute.

Substitute Rahmatsho and Daler proved decisive for the hosts.

In the 58th minute, Nepal conceded again as Azizboev rose above the defense to head home a high pass from Kamolov.

Defenders Ram and Ninzam Ghising were unable to stop him, leaving goalkeeper Krishal Moktan helpless.

As the match neared its conclusion, Rahmatsho added the third goal after an unmarked Olimjoda Fathullo provided him with an easy assist, and Daler completed the rout with a beautiful counter-attack goal, sealing a dominant 4-0 victory for Tajikistan.

Nepal now faces Syria on Saturday, who edged past the Philippines 2-1 in their opening match.

With Tajikistan scheduled to play the Philippines next, Nepal will have no option but to aim for a comprehensive win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
