KATHMANDU: Manchester United’s disappointing start to the season deepened on Wednesday as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-division side Grimsby Town in a dramatic penalty shootout.

After a 2-2 draw in regulation time, United fell 12-11 in the shootout, suffering one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history.

Grimsby shocked United with two first-half goals from Charles Vernam (22’) and Tyrell Warren (30’), the second coming from a mistake by goalkeeper André Onana.

United fought back in the second half after manager Rúben Amorim introduced Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matthijs de Ligt. Mbeumo pulled one back in the 75th minute before Harry Maguire equalized in the 89th.

The comeback, however, fell short in penalties. Matheus Cunha failed to convert United’s fifth spot-kick, while Mbeumo later struck the crossbar. Grimsby held their nerve to seal a famous 12-11 win, marking one of the club’s greatest nights.

Elsewhere in the League Cup, Everton beat Mansfield Town 2-0, Fulham defeated Bristol City 2-0, and Brighton thrashed Oxford United 6-0. Wolves edged West Ham 3-2, Millwall overcame Coventry City 2-1, and Swansea advanced 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Plymouth.

Wrexham stunned Preston North End 3-2, while Sheffield Wednesday eliminated Leeds United on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Port Vale beat Birmingham City 1-0, Brentford saw off Bournemouth 2-0, and Burnley defeated Derby County 2-1. Bradford City and Cardiff City both claimed 3-0 wins over Stoke City and Cheltenham Town, respectively.

The competition’s third round will now see the entry of Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham, setting up mouthwatering fixtures ahead.
