KATHMANDU: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing repeated violations of its governance obligations.

Despite the suspension, American teams will continue their pursuit of participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

In a statement released Tuesday night, the ICC said the decision was taken due to “failure to implement an effective governance structure and lack of progress in attaining national governing body status with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC),” among other issues. The ICC also noted actions that have “undermined the integrity of cricket in the USA and globally,” though detailed specifics were not disclosed.

The USA men’s team is still set to compete in next year’s T20 World Cup in February, with ICC temporarily overseeing team management. The team had reached the Super Eight stage in the 2024 men’s T20 World Cup, securing direct qualification for the 2026 edition.

“Suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to safeguard the long-term interests of the sport,” the ICC said, emphasizing that players and the game itself should not be affected by the decision.

USA Cricket had previously been flagged at the ICC’s 2024 Annual General Meeting for failing to meet membership criteria and was given 12 months to implement required reforms.
