KATHMANDU: Manchester City marked Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th career match in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the English Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Erling Haaland, Nico González and Jérémy Doku were on target as City delivered a dominant performance at home.

The match had an eventful start, with Haaland missing an early penalty, but he made up for it in the 29th minute, heading in the opener to give City the lead.

Liverpool thought they had equalized through Virgil van Dijk shortly afterward, but the goal was ruled out for offside following VAR review.

City doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when González’s effort deflected off a Liverpool defender and found the back of the net.

Doku, making his 100th appearance for the club, sealed the victory in the 63rd minute with a superb individual finish to put the result beyond doubt.

With this win, Manchester City climbed to second place in the league table with 22 points, just four points behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, slipped to eighth with 18 points from 11 matches.

In other Premier League fixtures on Sunday, Aston Villa thrashed Bournemouth 4-1, Brentford defeated Newcastle 3-1, and Nottingham Forest beat Leeds by the same scoreline. Crystal Palace and Brighton played out a goalless draw.
