KATHMANDU: Police have stated that the main cause of the bus accident that took place at Dharan-13, Zero Point on Sunday, which claimed the lives of five people, was brake failure.

According to DSP Bhishan Babu Rai of the Dharan Police, the bus was returning from Bhedetar when the brakes gave out before reaching Zero Point.

Survivors said the driver had warned passengers to hold onto the seats and stay alert as the bus descended the slope. “The bus gained speed as it went downhill. We screamed, but the tragedy could not be averted,” DSP Rai quoted the injured as saying.

The bus, numbered Ko 1 Kha 7119 and operated by Times International Academy, Janakpur, had been cleared for travel by the Itahari Transport Office.

The passengers, mainly relatives of the academy’s owners—Dhauriya Kumar Yadav and Rohit Mandal—were on a sightseeing trip after visiting Bhedetar.

Both owners were also on board, with Yadav among the deceased.
