RIGA: NATO fighters shot down a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace on Monday morning, the Latvian armed forces said.

French fighter jets of the NATO-led Baltic Air Policing Mission downed the drone that had flown into Latvian airspace as a result of Russia’s electromagnetic warfare.

The drone was shot down in Latvia’s eastern region of Latgale.

This was the first downing of an unmanned aerial vehicle detected in Latvian airspace.

On Monday morning, the armed forces had issued an aerial alert in Latvia’s eastern municipalities of Aluksne, Ludza, Balvi and Rezekne. The alert was later called off.
