KATHMANDU: At least five people were killed and 17 others injured after a passenger bus crashed in Dharan on Sunday, police said.
The bus (registration number Ko 1 Kha 7119), traveling from Dhankuta to Dharan, reportedly lost control due to brake failure and rammed into a house at Zero Point.
The vehicle then ploughed into a medical shop, crushing people who were inside at the time of the accident.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bhishan Babu Rai of the Area Police Office, Dharan, the injured have been rushed to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences for treatment.
Sunsari District Police Office spokesperson DSP Chandra Khadka confirmed that the accident occurred after the bus failed to brake on a turning section of the road.
He said three men and two women—possibly a mother and child—lost their lives on the spot.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.
Police also stated that the bus belonged to a school; however, no students were on board at the time of the incident.
Preliminary information suggests the crash may have occurred while attempting to avoid a scooter.
Authorities are investigating the incident further.
