KATHMANDU: Construction of the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium in Bharatpur has reached 40 percent completion, according to Bharatpur Metropolitan City.

The project is being developed with the joint support of the provincial and federal governments.

Engineer Ghanshyam Mishra of Bharatpur Metropolitan City informed that work on the second floor of both towers and the parapet is currently underway.

“Formwork and reinforcement for the parapet and towers are in progress, and wall construction on the towers has also started,” he said. Each tower will have three floors, while the stadium will include four parapets and two towers.

Mishra added that concrete work is ongoing to build rooms behind the parapet. Currently, 122 workers are involved in the project.

“During Tihar, around 25–30 Muslim workers will continue the construction. The pace will pick up again after Chhath,” he said.

Although 48 percent of the work was expected to be completed by now as per the contract, progress has been slightly delayed.

The project was handed over to the metropolis after the Dhurmus–Suntali Foundation failed to continue construction.

The contract was awarded to Himalayan Kalinchok BBR JV for Rs. 785 million, with completion targeted by Poush 22, 2083 BS.

The first phase will include seating for 15,000 spectators, two VIP towers, a main playing field with five pitches, drainage, fencing, road access, and parking facilities.

According to Engineer Mishra, the second phase will further expand capacity and infrastructure.

The stadium is being built on 20 bighas and 19 kathhas of land owned by Tribhuvan University and used by the Agriculture and Forestry University, located in Bharatpur Metropolitan City–15.

Once completed, it will be capable of hosting international-level cricket matches.
