KATHMANDU: On the occasion of the 2859th Tawar Lho (cat class) 2079 Sonam Lhosar, Nepal Tamang Ghedung organized a special program today in Tundikhel, Kathmandu based on original identity and civilization.

‘Lho’ means year and ‘Sar’ means new or fresh if translated, and the word ‘Sonam’ refers to the Tamang people in Nepal, thus the festival ‘Sonam Lhosar’ is the New Year event, according to the calendar followed by Tamang people which falls on Magh Shukla Paksha every year, according to the Lunar calendar.

The day is celebrated with fanfare by exchanging greetings and feasting on traditional foods.

According to Tamang tradition, Lord Buddha was born on the first day of the new moon in the month of Magha. As a result, the first day of the festival is thought to be the most important. The main celebrations and dances take place on this day.

Sonam Lochar is distinguished by prayers at monasteries. People also visit relatives to seek blessings from the family’s elders. People dress up in bright traditional outfits to commemorate the significance of the day in their lives.

Before the formal program began, a rally was held in Tundikhel, with participants gathering at Bhrikuti Mandap and dressed in Tamang attire. Young people are dressed in Tamang and culturally relevant attire at the event.
