KATHMANDU: Today, Charles Sobhraj, a French citizen, to handed over to immigration.

Sobhraj, who has been in Nepal’s Central Prison Sundhara for 19 years, was given a 9-month prison sentence after the Supreme Court (SSC) granted senior citizens exemption from imprisonment after being found guilty by the court in the case of murder of two people and attempted murder of one person.

After the SC overturned the imprisonment, Sobhraj’s Nepali wife Nihita Biswas stated that they had received justice, albeit late.

She reached at the Dillibazar immigration office with her mother and lawyer Sakuntala Biswas, expressing gratitude that Nepali law provided her with justice despite the fact that it was late.

A bench of SC Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha ordered on Wednesday to release him immediately and send him to the respective country within 15 days in a petition related to the transfer of prisoners.

As Sobhraj, who has served 19 years in the murder case of an American citizen, is over 77 years old, the Supreme Court ordered that 75 percent of his sentence be pardoned.

According to the SC’s order, Sobhraj sent a letter from both courts to the Central Jail on Thursday.

Sobhraj is set be released on Friday after Kathmandu Adat also sent a letter stating that he had been sentenced in the Yunus shooting incident. He is now being transported directly from jail to the Immigration Department.

The immigration department will then deport him to France.
