KATHMANDU: The Telugu film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor and comedian Fish Venkat, who passed away at the age of 53.

He had been undergoing treatment for severe kidney and liver failure and was on dialysis and ventilator support during his final days.

Despite doctors recommending a kidney transplant, the procedure could not be carried out in time.

Fish Venkat, whose real name was Venkat Raj (also known as Mangalampalli Vankatesh), was a popular face in Telugu cinema, known for his trademark Telangana accent and comic timing.

His unique screen presence earned him the nickname “Fish Venkat,” stemming from his early roles where he portrayed characters associated with fish markets.

Over the past two decades, he appeared in over 100 films, winning hearts with memorable roles in movies such as Kushi, Bunny, Adhurs, Brindaavanam, Gabbar Singh, DJ Tillu, and Slum Dog Husband.

Starting his acting career in the film Sammakka Sarakka, Venkat carved a niche for himself with his humorous yet gritty supporting roles, often balancing comedy and villainy.

In his final days, the actor’s family faced financial struggles. His daughter Shravanthi made a public appeal for financial help, revealing that they needed around ₹50–60 lakh for his transplant and critical care.

Though support came from a few actors and a state minister, it was not enough to save his life.

The family also clarified that a viral rumor about a major donation from actor Prabhas was false and likely the result of a scam.

Fish Venkat’s untimely death has raised concerns in the film fraternity about the lack of financial and medical security for supporting actors in the industry.

Despite his popularity and contributions, he spent his final days battling not just illness but also the burden of financial hardship.
