KATHMANDU: As the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 (March 5) approaches, the process of withdrawing names from the proportional representation closed lists has officially begun.

According to the Election Commission, candidates from major political parties have started submitting applications to remove their names from the preliminary lists.

Among them, the CPN-UML has recorded the highest number of withdrawals so far.

From the preliminary closed list submitted on Poush 13 and 14, five UML candidates have applied to withdraw their names.

These include Thakur Prasad Sharma and Lal Bahadur Rawal from the Khas Arya category.

Similarly, Bijay Singh Lama and Hirusara Rana from the Indigenous Nationalities group, and Anshu Singh from the Madhesi group, have also filed applications to exit the list.

The Nepali Congress has also seen withdrawals, with two candidates stepping back from the proportional list.

Dhurva Bahadur Mall and Srijana Mall, both from the Khas Arya group, have submitted formal requests to the Commission.

Likewise, Arvind Das and Kamal Rai Yadav from the Madhesi group, representing the Nepal Communist Party, have opted out of the electoral process.

From the newly emerged Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Sunita Nhyemaphuki has also applied to withdraw her name.

Under the election schedule, candidates listed in the proportional representation system are allowed to withdraw their names within a specified timeframe.

In line with this provision, candidates from various parties are reportedly stepping aside due to personal or party-related reasons.
