KATHMANDU: Vijay—popularly known as “Thalapathy”—has emerged as a major political force as his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, surges toward a historic victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Breaking decades of dominance by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, TVK has disrupted the state’s long-standing two-party system, positioning itself to form the next government.

Unlike traditional players, Vijay chose to contest independently—rejecting alliances with established political families—and campaigned as a “clean alternative” and a symbol of change. His message resonated strongly with voters seeking a break from conventional politics.

From Cinema Icon to Political Challenger

Vijay’s political journey had early hints in his 2013 film Thalaivaa, whose tagline “Time to Lead” sparked speculation about his ambitions. The film faced release restrictions during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, reportedly due to its political undertones.

Over the years, Vijay used films like Mersal, Sarkar, and Master to spotlight social issues, gradually building public trust beyond the screen.

During the campaign, he even encouraged children to influence their parents’ votes in favor of TVK—an unconventional move that appeared to have a notable grassroots impact. Attempts to weaken his image through personal rumors, including speculation about his private life, failed to dent his growing popularity.

A New Political Era

Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai to a film family, Vijay built a three-decade-long career starring in over 70 films, becoming one of India’s highest-paid actors. Now, he has stepped away from cinema to fully commit to politics.

With TVK on the brink of power, Tamil Nadu may be witnessing the rise of a new political era—one led by a former superstar who has successfully translated mass appeal into electoral momentum.
