KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Narayan Prakash Saud has emphasized the need for Nepal to develop a strategic electricity export policy in light of India’s growing energy demand.

Speaking at a policy dialogue organized by the Rastriya Swatantra Party in Kathmandu on Friday, MP Saud stated that Nepal currently lacks the infrastructure or geopolitical advantage to export electricity to third countries bypassing India.

He clarified that due to geographical constraints, it is not feasible for Nepal to export electricity to countries other than India without going through Indian territory.

Highlighting the need for maximum value generation from Nepal’s water resources, Saud stressed the importance of research and analysis to shape effective policies.

He also noted that Nepal has historically failed to fully utilize its hydropower potential due to the lack of proper policy and geographical limitations.

MP Saud called for increased collaboration with the private sector to harness the country’s hydropower resources effectively, which he believes is key to driving Nepal’s economic prosperity.
