KATHMANDU: France national football team head coach Didier Deschamps is mourning the death of his mother, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Tuesday.
Deschamps reportedly learned of his mother’s passing while the team was preparing for their final group match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
He has since left the national team camp and returned to France to attend the funeral.
Due to this family tragedy, Deschamps will miss France’s upcoming Group I match against Norway.
Assistant coach Guy Stéphan will take charge of the team in his absence.
The FFF expressed full support for Deschamps during this difficult time, while the French squad observed a moment of silence in his mother’s honor.
France have already secured qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament after strong group-stage performances.
