KATHMANDU: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a vintage performance on Tuesday, scoring twice to inspire a dominant 5–0 victory over Uzbekistan in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

After a disappointing 1–1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match, Portugal responded emphatically, with Ronaldo striking twice in the first half to set the tone for a commanding win.

The 41-year-old forward also etched his name into football history, becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup editions.

His brace also made him Portugal’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, surpassing legendary striker Eusébio.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez praised both Ronaldo and long-time rival Lionel Messi, saying their rivalry has elevated the sport over the years.

“Both players have taken football to another level for many years. Their competition has pushed each other to be better,” Martínez said.

He also described Ronaldo as a model professional and an inspiration for younger players, highlighting his consistency and mentality both on and off the pitch.

Ronaldo’s emotional celebration after scoring saw him gesture toward the cameras, appearing to signal “I am back,” though Martínez insisted the veteran forward never lost confidence.

“He is human and allowed to express emotions. But I have never seen a player like him who returns every day with the same hunger to work,” he added.

Uzbekistan coach Fabio Cannavaro also praised the Portuguese star, warning defenders against giving him any space.

“Ronaldo must not be given even a centimetre. If he gets a chance, he scores,” said the former World Cup-winning captain.

“Portugal players always look to find him. As a defender, you must stay extremely alert. He is a complete professional,” Cannavaro added.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also congratulated Ronaldo, calling his achievement “incredible” and wished him success for the remainder of the tournament.
