KATHMANDU: National Assembly lawmaker Renu Chand on Friday questioned what action the government would take after worms were reportedly found in food served to landless squatters.

Speaking during the National Assembly meeting, Chand referred to a recent incident in which a restaurant was fined Rs 300,000 after a fish bone was found in an omelet served to the Home Minister.

She asked why the government had not faced similar accountability when contaminated food was allegedly provided to squatters.

“A fish bone was found in the minister’s omelet, and a Rs 300,000 fine was imposed. That was appropriate. But worms were found in food served to squatters. What fine will be imposed on the government? What action will be taken?” she asked.

Chand also accused the government of betraying its promises to landless communities. She said political leaders sought votes by pledging to rehabilitate squatters but, once in power, instead displaced them.

According to Chand, the government is currently removing squatters even from holding centers. She criticized what she described as a lack of ideological clarity, saying the government had claimed it could solve longstanding problems but was instead violating the human rights of vulnerable communities.

The lawmaker further alleged that the government’s treatment of landless squatters was unjust and amounted to a violation of their human rights.
