Police senior officer dies in road crash, wife injured

KATHMANDU: A senior Nepal Police officer died in a road accident in Sunsari district on Tuesday afternoon, while his wife sustained injuries, authorities said.

Senior Sub-Inspector (Senior SI) Lalu Kumar Yadav was killed after a collision between a motorcycle and a car at around 12:00 PM in Naraha Chowk of Barju Rural Municipality–6.

According to police, a Province 1–02–002 Cha 6252 electric car and a Province 1–01–003 Pa 2612 motorcycle collided head-on. Yadav, who was riding the motorcycle, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Birat Nursing Home in Biratnagar for treatment.

He was declared dead at 4:16 PM during treatment.

His wife, Rampari Yadav, who was riding pillion, was also injured in the crash. She suffered injuries to her right leg and is in stable condition, police confirmed.

The deceased, a resident of Bishnupur Rural Municipality–1 in Saptari, had recently been promoted from Sub-Inspector to Senior Sub-Inspector and was being transferred to the District Police Office, Siraha.

He was reportedly en route to assume his new post when the accident occurred.

The car was driven by Dr. Rajendra Chaudhary, a radiologist from Katahari Rural Municipality–3 in Morang.

He has been taken into police custody for further investigation. Dr. Chaudhary also serves as the president of the Nepal Medical Association’s Biratnagar branch.

Police said the cause of the collision is under investigation.

The motorcycle also caught fire following the impact, officials added.
