PM Oli pushes for full operation of Korala border point with China
The meeting focused on improving connectivity and addressing the economic struggles of Upper Mustang residents.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced that preparations are underway to fully operate the Korala border crossing in Mustang by developing necessary infrastructure and institutional mechanisms.
During a meeting late last night at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar with federal MP representing Mustang and local representatives, PM Oli reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making the Korala checkpoint fully functional.
The meeting focused on improving connectivity and addressing the economic struggles of Upper Mustang residents.
PM Oli recalled several key development initiatives in the region, such as the commencement of the Benighat–Korala road construction, facilitating Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Muktinath, initiating a cable car project to Muktinath, declaring the region a super zone for apple production, and promoting yak farming.
He also highlighted his recent on-site inspection of the Rasuwagadhi checkpoint following a flash flood on Ashar 24 that swept away the Bhote Koshi River friendship bridge, halting cross-border travel.
During the visit, PM Oli had directed concerned ministries to explore alternative routes and expedite full border operations.
The Mustang delegation urged PM Oli to reconsider the government’s decision to classify areas such as Lo Manthang and Lo-Ghekar Damodar Kunda as restricted zones, which require a $500 royalty fee per foreign tourist.
They claimed the policy has discouraged tourism, severely affecting local hotels and businesses.
They also demanded urgent blacktopping of the 97-kilometer Kagbeni–Korala stretch of the Kaligandaki Corridor and the construction of essential infrastructure like customs, immigration, integrated security posts, and a dry port at the border.
Currently, stalled bridge contracts over the Tatopani, Dana, Panda, and Tangbe rivers have further delayed progress.
The delegation included federal lawmaker Yogendra Gauchan Thakali, Lo Manthang Rural Municipality Chair Tashi Nhurbu Gurung, Lopsang Chhompel Bista, and other local leaders, who emphasized that Upper Mustang’s economy continues to suffer due to poor road connectivity and rigid tourism policies.
