KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Eknath Dhakal has emphasized the need for Nepal to prioritize religious tourists to boost the country’s tourism sector.

Speaking at the meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee on Wednesday, Dhakal highlighted the importance of addressing current challenges by promoting religious tourism more effectively.

He proposed establishing a dedicated fast-track immigration counter at airports for Buddhist pilgrims, suggesting it would reflect Nepal’s respect for their spiritual journeys. “We must create a tourist-friendly environment right from the airport,” he said. “Religious tourists are often disciplined and respectful, and deserve efficient services upon arrival.”

Dhakal urged the Nepal Tourism Board to launch special programs targeting religious visitors, particularly Buddhists, citing Nepal’s identity as the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

“Nepal is known globally as the land of Gautam Buddha and Mount Everest. What harm is there in providing fast-track services for Buddhist pilgrims at the airport? Other Buddhist countries already do this as a mark of respect,” he said.

He further stressed that fostering a tourism-friendly atmosphere and giving top priority to religious tourists would not only strengthen Nepal’s spiritual significance but also enhance its international tourism appeal.

Dhakal also pointed out the special spiritual ties that Nepal shares with neighboring countries like China and India, noting that many visitors from these countries travel to Nepal for religious reasons.
