Minister Gurung said the government would review previous investigation reports related to the 2001 palace massacre and proceed with further inquiry based on their findings.
KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has announced the initiation of a renewed investigation into the Narayanhiti Royal Palace massacre, shortly after assuming office and taking the oath of secrecy at Sheetal Niwas on Tuesday.
Taking charge at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Singha Durbar, Minister Gurung said the government would review previous investigation reports related to the 2001 palace massacre and proceed with further inquiry based on their findings.
He also confirmed the formation of a special task force to study whether criminal cases linked to the Gen-Z movement-related incidents could be withdrawn, and to submit recommendations accordingly.
In addition, the minister announced the creation of a specialized Security Investigation Team (SIT) to prevent leaks of sensitive information from the Home Ministry and Nepal Police, and to identify and take action against those responsible.
Gurung further directed the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police to become more effective and expedite the resolution of ongoing serious criminal cases.
He also instructed authorities to form specialized units within the bureau to handle cases related to economic crimes and organized crime based on their nature.
He emphasized that any form of character assassination or misconduct against citizens would be taken seriously by the ministry.
The minister’s decisions signal a strong focus on high-profile cold cases, institutional reform, and tightening internal security within Nepal’s law enforcement agencies.
