KATHMANDU: A tourism worker known as “Hilari” or Dawa Sherpa, who had been missing for a week in the Mount Everest Base Camp region, was found alive and in a critical condition on Thursday morning, according to officials.

He was discovered by workers of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) in the Khumbu Icefall area, crawling toward the base camp after days of being unaccounted for.

According to former Tourism Board member Ngawangima Sherpa, the worker had gone missing while returning to base camp about a week ago.

Despite search efforts, including helicopter operations around the higher camps near the Everest climbing route, he could not be located at the time.

SPCC Executive Director Chhiring Sherpa said he was found near a crampon point in the Khumbu Icefall, severely weakened and injured by frost exposure on his hands and feet.

Rescue workers immediately provided food and initial medical support.

His condition is reported to be stable for now, and arrangements are being made for helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu for further treatment.

Climbers and expedition members have described his survival after a week in the harsh Everest conditions as nothing short of a miracle.
