Govt orders all social media platforms to register within 7 days
The move follows a directive from the Supreme Court’s full bench, which had instructed the government to ensure registration before allowing social media operations.
KATHMANDU: The government has taken a major step to regulate social media platforms operating in the country.
All social media platforms—domestic and foreign—must register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within seven days, according to a public notice issued on Thursday.
The move follows a directive from the Supreme Court’s full bench, which had instructed the government to ensure registration before allowing social media operations.
The Cabinet had already endorsed the decision on Bhadra 9.
As per the ministry, companies or individuals running social media platforms must submit an application in line with the “Directive for Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2080.” Applications should be prepared using the prescribed format (Annex 1) and must include all required documents.
The guidelines also require platforms to appoint a local contact person in Nepal, designate an officer to handle user complaints, and assign a compliance officer to oversee self-regulation.
Failure to comply within the stipulated deadline will result in the deactivation of the platform in Nepal, with the Nepal Telecommunications Authority authorized to enforce the measure.
Platforms will only be reactivated once registration is complete.
