KATHMANDU: Shalikram Ghimire has been elected as the Lumbini Province President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) after securing the highest votes in the first round and later consolidating support from his rival.

In a six-way contest, Ghimire led the first round with 199 votes out of 552 cast, but fell short of the required 51 percent majority needed for an outright victory.

This triggered a planned second-round vote against his nearest rival, Gopal Ghimire, who had secured 87 votes.

However, before the second round could take place, Gopal Ghimire extended his support to Shalikram Ghimire, paving the way for his unopposed election as province chair, according to Chief Election Officer Gokul Sapkota.

In the initial round, other candidates received 84 votes (Ganesh Paudel), 80 votes (Dr. Rajkumar Subedi), 71 votes (Manju Bhusal), and 19 votes (Madhav Prasad Aryal).
