KATHMANDU: The Itahari Sub-metropolitan City mayor’s office building has been set on fire.
The blaze engulfed Mayor Hemkarna Paudel’s chamber along with the Revenue Division, where documents were scattered across the premises.
According to eyewitness Nabina Dahal, laptops, printers, and other equipment were left in disarray while the city’s own fire engine was rendered unusable due to the extent of the damage.
Authorities fear significant losses as the fire continues to spread inside the municipal complex.
Protesters also pelted stones at the building during the chaos. In response, the Sunsari District Administration has imposed an indefinite curfew.
Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra announced the order, effective until further notice.
The curfew extends from the Nepali Army barracks to Paruhang Chowk in the north, from Milan Chowk to the Jute Development Zone in the east, from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority office to Satthi Petrol Pump and the bus park in the south, and from Kalanki Mode to Janata Settlement in the west.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors as the situation remains tense.
