BUDAPEST: Eight foreigners were killed and two others injured in two traffic accidents on Hungary’s M1 motorway near the northwestern city of Gyor early Friday, police said.
A truck struck a road maintenance machine and caught fire at the 114-km section of the motorway to the Hungarian village of Hegyeshalom near the border with Austria, killing its driver at the scene, according to the Gyor-Moson-Sopron County police.
Shortly afterwards, a minibus carrying nine people crashed into a truck that had stopped due to traffic congestion caused by the previous accident. Seven people in the minibus were killed on the spot, with two others injured, the police said.
The motorway was closed in both directions while traffic was diverted during the police’s investigation.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar expressed condolences on social media to the families of the eight foreign nationals who died in the accidents, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
