KATHMANDU: Experts have urged the government to address the complications surrounding the classification of landless Dalits, landless squatters, and unmanaged settlers.

Speaking at a meeting of the Agriculture, Cooperative, and Natural Resources Committee of the House of Representatives on Thursday, land experts highlighted problems encountered in the ongoing discussions on a land-related bill.

They stated that the current classification and verification process for the landless is unnecessarily complicated.

Land expert Dharmaraj Joshi pointed out inconsistencies in form submissions, noting that in some cases, landless individuals had mistakenly filled out forms intended for unmanaged settlers.

He emphasized the need for immediate corrections and a clear system.

Joshi also stressed that the criteria for determining the minimum amount of land to be provided to landless individuals remain undefined, urging the government to establish clear standards.

Similarly, land expert Jagat Deuja called for a comprehensive bill that genuinely addresses the long-standing issues of the landless population.

He expressed concern that past commissions formed to solve land-related issues had failed, leading to public distrust, and urged the committee to take this issue seriously.

Deuja also highlighted the need for effective implementation, warning that merely passing laws without proper execution would repeat past failures.

He called on the government and lawmakers to remain vigilant to ensure meaningful outcomes.
