KATHMANDU: The government has removed Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi and appointed Rameshwar Dangal, formerly Defence Secretary, as the new Home Secretary.

Duwaidi, accused of involvement in the crackdown during the Gen Z protests, has been transferred to the National Planning Commission Secretariat.

Sources from the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ office stated that the decision will be implemented by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Rameshwar Dangal, a career officer of the Home Administration cadre, has previously held key roles in the Home Ministry, administration, and security sector before his tenure as Defence Secretary.

Although Duwaidi was linked to the Visit Visa case, he had remained Home Secretary for about a week and a half following the change of government.

His leadership during the crackdown on the Gen Z movement had faced widespread criticism.

The transfer comes amid calls for investigation into officials involved in the protest crackdown.

Human rights bodies and various organizations have questioned the legality and justification of the use of force against protesters.
