KATHMANDU: The Nepali Police’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has taken a statement from Dipesh, the son of outgoing Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, on suspicion of complicity in the smuggling of 60 kg of gold seized from outside the Tribhuvan Airport.

On Monday, the CIB obtained a statement from Dipesh based on his connection with Dawa Chhiring, a Belgian citizen of Chinese ancestry who was arrested in the gold smuggling case.

“Based on the connection with the claim and other information, a statement has been taken from Dipesh,” said a top police source. The CIB is investigating by making a list of 100 people suspected of involvement in the 60 kg gold smuggling case.

According to a top police source, Dipesh’s statement was taken for 4 hours. With Dipesh’s name linked to the gold smuggling case, there was pressure on the Maoist ranks to investigate him. Puan Sankagan, a student close to the Maoist center, is the leader of the All Revolutionaries.

Chhiring, who was running a hotel in Thamel, was arrested on Shrawan 14 (July 30).
