KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has shown an interest in having India’s geographical identity etched on murals in the country’s new parliament building.
Bhattarai voiced his curiosity after the mural depicting Kapilvastu and Lumbini in Nepal as Indian land, which was recently inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was painted in the parliament building.
He stated that referring to Nepali soil Lumbini and Kapilvastu as Indian land could sever diplomatic ties between the two countries.
“The controversial ‘Akhanda Bharat’ mural on India’s recently inaugurated new parliament building could lead to unnecessary and damaging diplomatic spats in its neighbours, including Nepal, and is likely to exacerbate the trust deficit that is already eroding bilateral relations between India’s closest neighbours,” he said. It would be wise to communicate the real intention and impact of this mural by opening it in time.’
