KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has ruled that the Ichchumati (Tukucha) River, which flows through the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, is a river, not a sewer.

There was a legal case after the Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation began opening the river from Jai Nepal Hall to the Kamaladi area since it was covered.

The Metropolitan Corporation’s spokesperson, Naveen Manandhar, stated that after reading the complete wording of the court’s ruling, it is stated that the river is the river, regardless of whether or not the land on the river was obtained in accordance with the land acquisition statute.

‘It is identified as it is a river. The land associated with it will be made public,’ he added of the High Court’s complete text. If the land is obtained legally, the Metropolitan Corporation is willing to deduct the cost.

Manandhar claims he will resume work after the cut.

Mandira Shahi, the court’s spokesman, also confirmed what was said in the judgment: Tukucha was a river, not a sewer.

Balendra Shah, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Municipality’s chief executive, stated on social media today that following the court’s judgment, the river and the land on the Metropolitan Municipality’s right and left sides will be preserved.
