KATHMANDU: A one-month campaign has been conducted to reduce criminal incidents within the tourist destination of Thamel.

To reduce criminal incidents in Thamel, the Thamel Tourism Development Council collaborated with Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nepal Police, concerned house owners, and merchants for a one-month campaign.

Bhawishwar Sharma, chair of the council, stated that the campaign was launched in response to complaints about domestic and foreign tourists being robbed and immoral, polluting the environment by burning sekuwa (roasted meat) on the streets, street children, beggars, selling goods in carts, and cheating in the name of bare trade.

He claims that the program will also help to reduce noise pollution in Thamel. According to Chair Sharma, the council team will run the campaign from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m.

“At the beginning, we will talk to the people who cause trouble to the tourists and make noise inside the Thamel. Even during the talking, if they do not act, we will arrest them and take action,” she said. She also asked the tourists to contact the Thamel Tourism Council during the night time.

Thamel’s nightlife has thrived since the government’s decision to allow it to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to aid in the development of Corona-affected tourism. Hotels, restaurants, dance bars, dance clubs, double evenings, nightclubs, and lounge bars have thrived in Thamel, but noise pollution has become a concern, according to neighbors.

Vice President of the Council Sahdev (Bimal) Dhamala stated that the Thamel Council has conducted a campaign to build a safe and orderly Thamel in the presence of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police, Lainchaur and Durbar Marg police circles, traffic police, tourist police, and local homeowners and businessmen.

Thamel attracts 80% of all tourists who visit Nepal. Kathmandu Metropolitan City- 16, 17, 26, and 27 Wards of Thamel are home to around three thousand residents and business owners.
