KATHMANDU: The Police Headquarters has written a letter to Parliament urging that CPN-UML MP Laxmi Mahato Koiri be suspended.

Koiri is evading arrest, according to House Rules 2079, and the police have ordered that he be suspended. Even earlier, the police had informed the Parliament that MP Koiri was absconding. However, under the old rules, the Parliament was hesitant to proceed with the letter.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire said that after the new rules were made, there was no official information from anywhere that MP Koiri was absconding. Speaker Ghimire said that the Speaker will not take any action until official information comes from somewhere.

Based on the speaker’s remark, the police have written a letter to Parliament for the second time, demanding that MP Koiri be suspended.

During the Madhesh movement in 2072 Bhadra 25 (11 Sept 2015), a police inspector of the Armed Police Force, Thaman BK, was besieged and beaten to death.

Following the custodial argument, the district court ordered Mahato’s release on bail of one lakh rupees. However, on 2077 Mangsir 19 (4 Dec 2020) , the Janakpurdham High Court ordered Mahato to be detained. Mahato has been on the police absconding list since then.

The MPs of the opposition party have been protesting against the decision to make him a member of the parliamentary committee due to the fact that there is a death case against UML MP Koiri elected from Mahottari-1.
