KATHMANDU: A cold storage has come into operation at Myanglung, the district headquarters of Tehrathum.

The storage was built with the intention of storing seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by farmers and selling them at a profit during the off-season.

Previously, unsold vegetables and fruits were thrown away due to a lack of cold storage in Tehrathum.

Meanwhile, farmers are ecstatic about the construction of a 1000-metric-ton cold storage facility in Myanglung Municipality’s Ward 9.

The Kiachu Cooperative Institution took the initiative to build the cold storage facility with the assistance of the state government.

Tanka Maya Limbu, Vice Chair of Kiachu Cooperative Society, stated that the farmers are relieved after the cold storage operation.

Farmers in Myanglung Municipality and Phedap Rural Municipality, two of Tehrathum’s six municipalities, have already begun bringing their orange produce to the store.

The cooperative purchases oranges in Tehrathum and exports them to the Terai districts.

According to farmer Hom Bahadur Khapung, the problem of rotting and unsold oranges has been resolved following the construction of a cold storage facility in Tehrathum.

Oranges are grown commercially on 616 hectares across all six rural municipalities in Tehrathum.

Tehrathum produces an average of 3,880 metric tons of oranges per year, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre.

In comparison to last year, production is expected to increase by 13 metric tons this year.
