Home Minister Rabi’s citizenship dispute to be heard on Jan 6

KATHMANDU: A hearing on the eligibility of the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane as a member of Parliament will be held on Jan 6 in the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court.

On Jan 6, lawyers from both sides will argue in the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Court whether Lamichhane is fit to serve in parliament.

The court will then decide what should happen.

A writ was filed in the Supreme Court demanding that Lamichhane be prevented from taking the oath of parliament.

A hearing will be held on the aforementioned writ.

A petition was filed demanding that Lamichhane’s membership in the House of Representatives be revoked because he did not renounce his Nepali citizenship by acquiring foreign citizenship, did not re-acquire Nepali citizenship after relinquishing his foreign citizenship, ran on the basis of his old citizenship, and was elected to the House of Representatives (HoR) after giving up his foreign passport and holding a Nepali passport.
