KATHMANDU: Yemen’s Chair of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, has declared a 90-day nationwide state of emergency to safeguard national security and maintain public order.

Alongside the emergency declaration, Al-Alimi ordered the closure of all land, sea, and air border crossings for 72 hours, effective immediately.

The measures were announced through an official statement released by the state news agency SABA.

According to the statement, the government has also cancelled its security agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing threats to Yemen’s sovereignty and stability.

The decision comes after the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) reportedly took control of strategic locations in Yemen’s Hadhramaut and Al-Mahrah provinces.

In response, Al-Alimi issued a strict 24-hour ultimatum, ordering UAE-backed forces to withdraw from both provinces.

He said the extraordinary measures were necessary to defend national security, preserve territorial integrity, and restore public order amid escalating tensions.
