Woman dies in alcohol dispute, man arrested

KATHMANDU: A 29-year-old woman has died after a violent altercation during an alcohol consumption dispute in eastern Nepal’s Jhapa district, police said.

The incident occurred on Monday night around 9:15 p.m. at an open ground near AIMS Secondary Boarding School in Arjundhara Municipality–8, Kusalchowk.

According to police, the victim, identified as Kajal Basnet (Suwedi) of Arjundhara–8, was involved in an argument when she was allegedly pushed by a 24-year-old man, Kiran Gautam of Arjundhara–5, Kanchanbari.

She fell and struck her head on a concrete divider placed at the site boundary, sustaining critical injuries.

Locals rushed her first to Shankar Hospital and later to B&C Hospital in Birtamode. As her condition worsened, she was referred to Provincial Mechi Hospital in Bhadrapur, where she died at around 4:40 a.m. on Tuesday during treatment.

Police said Gautam was arrested immediately from the scene. He has been charged under homicide provisions of Nepal’s Criminal Code, 2074 BS, and remanded for five days for further investigation.

Authorities also confirmed that the victim’s husband is currently working in Dubai. A formal complaint in the case was filed by her sister, Pratima Bhattarai.

Investigations are ongoing.
