KATHMANDU: Nepal has entered a week of celebrations and political momentum as a series of public holidays and the upcoming parliamentary elections have turned March into a special period for the general public.

Starting today, the government has announced a week-long public holiday across the country, bringing festive cheer and election excitement nationwide.

Public holidays have been declared on March 2 and 3 to mark Holi, the festival of colors.

This will be followed by special holidays on March 4, 5 & 6 in view of the House of Representatives elections.

Additionally, March 7 falls on the regular weekly holiday (Saturday), while March 8 marks International Women’s Day, extending the continuous holiday period to seven days.

As a result, government offices, banks and financial institutions, and educational institutions will remain closed throughout the week.

The extended holiday, combined with the approaching elections, has led to a noticeable surge in the number of people leaving the federal capital, Kathmandu, for their hometowns and other destinations.

Transport hubs have reported a sharp rise in outbound passengers movement, reflecting the dual spirit of celebration and civic participation sweeping the nation.

Authorities expect travel congestion to continue over the coming days as families head home to celebrate Holi and participate in the electoral process.
