UML demands probe into tax changes & PM’s remarks
Aryal particularly pointed to alleged manipulation in taxes related to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, claiming it reflected a deeper pattern of wrongdoing.
KATHMANDU: The CPN (UML) has demanded a high-level parliamentary investigation into alleged irregularities in tax rate adjustments within the Economic Bill and what it describes as controversial remarks made by the Prime Minister.
Speaking on behalf of the party, UML parliamentary vice leader Padma Aryal said the Prime Minister’s recent statements had “hurt national sovereignty,” while the alleged alteration of tax rates after the budget was presented in Parliament amounted to a “serious economic offense.”
She accused the process of changing tax figures after parliamentary submission as a violation of legislative authority and fiscal discipline, calling it “intentional corruption” rather than a policy decision.
Aryal particularly pointed to alleged manipulation in taxes related to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, claiming it reflected a deeper pattern of wrongdoing.
Referring to past precedents, she recalled the formation of a parliamentary special committee during the fiscal year 2079/80 budget controversy and argued that a similar mechanism is needed this time to uncover the truth.
“The question is who benefited from changing figures after they were passed by Parliament, and for whose interest it was done,” Aryal said, adding that the concerned minister must provide clear answers.
The UML also reiterated its demand for clarification over remarks attributed to Prime Minister Balen Shah, stating that the party would continue its protest until a satisfactory explanation is given in Parliament.
While ruling and opposition parties continue discussions to resolve the parliamentary deadlock, UML leaders have said they will not compromise on issues of national interest and financial transparency.
