Two held for Rs 110 million UK job scam

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested two individuals accused of defrauding over Rs 110 million from 38 people by luring them with false promises of foreign employment in the United Kingdom.
The arrested are identified as 44-year-old Laxman Parajuli of Ratuwamai Municipality-10 in Morang and 47-year-old Arunraj Sharma of Sabaila Municipality-12 in Dhanusha.
They were apprehended by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office on Jestha 25 from Naikap, Kathmandu.
According to the office spokesperson, SP Kazi Kumar Acharya, the duo convinced victims by claiming they had guaranteed employment opportunities in the UK and collected large sums of money from them under this pretense.
A total of 38 victims have filed complaints backed by evidence, alleging that the two swindled Rs 110.697 million.
Despite repeated payments, the promised process never moved forward, leading victims to realize they had been deceived.
They subsequently approached the police for action.
Both suspects have been handed over to the Department of Foreign Employment, Tahachal, for further legal proceedings.
The department will conduct additional investigations and initiate actions in accordance with the Foreign Employment Act, 2064.
